How to Prepare for an MRI Scan: Your Checklist

By Clarus Magnus Health & Diagnostics · Published

Preparing for MRI is easier when you have instructions for your exact examination. Avoid copying the fasting advice given to a friend whose scan may have been different.

Check food and medicine instructions

Eating and drinking requirements vary. Ask the imaging centre what applies to you, and do not stop prescribed medicines unless your healthcare team instructs you to do so. Mention diabetes or other conditions that may affect preparation.

Tell the team before you arrive

Report implants, medical devices, metal fragments, previous operations and possible pregnancy. Bring relevant device records. If you are anxious in enclosed spaces, discuss this in advance rather than waiting until you enter the scanner.

What should you bring and wear?

Bring your referral and relevant previous imaging. Follow instructions about clothing, jewellery, electronic devices and removable accessories. Staff may ask you to change into a gown to avoid unsuitable materials entering the scan room.

Read about Magnus MRI services and ask the team about preparation before your visit.

Is fasting always necessary?

No. The instructions depend on the examination and whether additional measures such as sedation are planned. Ask for clear written instructions and check anything you do not understand before the appointment day.
